Move Over, Hello Kitty: The Sanrio Character Tier List Nobody Asked For But Everyone Needs

Listen. Hello Kitty is iconic. She is the queen. She is the blueprint. We are not here to drag her — we would never. But if you think she's the only reason Sanrio has been eating for over six decades, you are sleeping on a goldmine of chaotic, adorable, deeply relatable characters who deserve their flowers RIGHT NOW.

Sanrio currently has over 400 characters in its universe, which is honestly a lot of emotional support to choose from. Today, we're diving into the ones who have clawed their way into our hearts, our meme folders, and our Amazon wishlists. We're judging them on three very important criteria: personality, aesthetic appeal, and meme potential. Science, basically.

S-Tier: Living Rent-Free in Everyone's Head

Gudetama — The Patron Saint of Doing Nothing

If you have ever looked at your to-do list and physically sighed, Gudetama was made for you. This sleepy, existentially exhausted egg yolk debuted in 2013 after winning a Sanrio character contest, and honestly? The people chose correctly. Gudetama doesn't want to get up. Gudetama doesn't want to be eaten. Gudetama just wants to lie there, draped over a piece of bacon, thinking about absolutely nothing.

The meme potential here is off the charts. There's a Netflix anime series now, which means Gudetama has officially achieved the American Dream while doing the bare minimum. Aesthetic-wise, the yellow-on-white palette is clean, simple, and shows up beautifully on everything from phone cases to throw pillows. A true icon of our generation.

Aggretsuko — She's Literally Us at 5 PM on a Friday

Aggretsuko is a 25-year-old red panda who works a soul-crushing office job and copes by screaming death metal at a karaoke bar after work. If that sentence didn't just describe your entire spiritual experience, we don't know what to tell you. She got her own Netflix series (four seasons!), a dedicated fanbase, and the kind of relatability that makes people feel personally seen in a way therapy hasn't quite managed yet.

Personality: 10/10. Aesthetic: adorable red panda in office clothes — somehow both cute AND deeply tired. Meme potential: infinite. Aggretsuko is the Sanrio character for people who thought they were "too cool" for Sanrio and then immediately fell in love with Sanrio.

A-Tier: Cult Favorites Who Deserve the Mainstream

Badtz-Maru — The Original Edgelord

Born in 1993, this little penguin with spiky hair and a perpetual scowl was basically Sanrio's attempt to market to kids who thought everything was too cute. Jokes on them, because Badtz-Maru IS too cute, and his grumpy face only makes him more loveable. He wants to be a villain. He is not a villain. He is a small penguin who is mildly inconvenienced by everything.

His aesthetic — black, white, yellow star, permanent side-eye — has made a massive comeback in the Y2K revival space. You're seeing him on crop tops, bucket hats, and those chunky platform sneakers that are everywhere right now. Meme potential is strong because his expression works for literally any situation where you are not thrilled about what's happening.

Cinnamoroll — The Soft Boy We All Needed

Okay, Cinnamoroll technically isn't that obscure anymore — he's been ranking in Sanrio's annual popularity polls like a serious contender for years. But a lot of people in the US still sleep on him, and that is a tragedy. He's a chubby white puppy with big blue eyes and cinnamon-roll ears who lives at a café and loves floating through the sky. There is no conflict in Cinnamoroll's life. There is only softness.

Aesthetic appeal is through the roof. His color palette (white, baby blue, soft pink) is basically custom-made for Pinterest boards and bedroom inspo posts. Personality-wise, he's the comfort character you reach for when the world is a lot. Meme potential is gentler — less chaotic, more "I am fragile and I need a hug."

B-Tier: Underrated Gems That Deserve Way More Credit

Pompompurin — The Golden Retriever of Sanrio Characters

This golden pudding-hat-wearing dog is, objectively, a very good boy. He's lazy in a cozy way (as opposed to Gudetama's existential way), he loves eating, and he has a posse of little friends who follow him everywhere. He's been around since 1996 and has a dedicated following that feels like a secret club.

His brown and yellow color scheme is very warm, very autumnal, very "I baked something and I want you to try it." He doesn't dominate the meme space, but he absolutely should.

My Melody — Cottagecore Before Cottagecore Was Cool

This little white bunny in a pink hood has been rocking the soft, cottagecore aesthetic since 1975. She bakes. She loves flowers. She is relentlessly kind. In a world of chaotic characters, My Melody is the one who will bring you soup when you're sick and genuinely mean it. Her counterpart, Kuromi — a mischievous bunny in a black jester hat — is technically her rival, but the fandom has decided they are actually best friends or something more, and honestly, we respect that energy.

The Wildcard: Characters Too Chaotic to Rank

Hangyodon — The Cryptid of Sanrio

Hangyodon is a fish-frog creature who has been around since 1985 and has recently gone viral because he looks like he's having a really bad time. He is not conventionally cute. He is not trying to be. He's got a very specific niche audience that loves him precisely because he seems forgotten, overlooked, and a little sad. There's something beautiful about that.

So, Who's Your Character?

The magic of Sanrio is that there is genuinely a character for every single mood, personality, and aesthetic preference. Feeling lazy and over it? Gudetama. Screaming internally at work? Aggretsuko. Perpetually unimpressed? Badtz-Maru. Need something soft and safe? Cinnamoroll.

The brand has quietly built a universe that mirrors the full spectrum of human emotion — just wrapped in the cutest possible packaging. And THAT is why Sanrio has been running the cute-culture game for over 60 years without breaking a sweat.

Now go update your phone case accordingly. You know what to do.
